Luang Prabang Morning Market crabs_2

My article on delicious food in Laos’ ancient royal capital, Luang Prabang, is in the spring 2013 issue of Taste & Travel International magazine.  Published four times per year, this great print mag focuses exclusively on culinary travel (click HERE to subscribe (Zinio or paper, $25 plus shipping).

Click HERE to see my article, which includes an easy recipe for my favourite sandwich … almost like the ladies in Luang Prabang make it.

While they didn’t get credit in the print edition, I’d like to give a big shout out to two great photographers who kindly shared their photos with me:

  • Dani Heinrich of GlobetrotterGirls.com has six photos featured in the article (the photo of the cool crab-carrying and -cooking basket above is hers); and
  • Rick Whiteford has two photos featured, plus gave me great tips on the latest goings on in Luang Prabang.

Scroll down to the end of the article for photo credit details.  I’ll be back in Laos myself in late 2013, and hope to get some great photos of my own!

My latest post as World Travel Buzz‘s International Eating Expert is about eating sweet things in New York City.  And there’s a recipe for caramel Chelsea buns, inspired by Danny Meyer’s Maialino restaurant.  Click HERE to read the article.

(Although not mentioned, the concretes from Shake Shack (above) are also delicious!)

Have you read Eat In Eat Out magazine?  It is a digital mag for people who love to cook, eat and dine out.

My little piece on Stephen Beckta’s third restaurant, gezellig, is in the Holiday 2012 issue.  Check it out on the EIEO site HERE.

The link to my blog post on gezellig is HERE.

Gezellig is Gezellig

Lucky Ottawa!

Steve Beckta’s latest — gezellig — opens October 22 and it is indeed gezellig.

Gezellig is a Dutch word that roughly translates as “cozy conviviality”.  Now, all three restaurants in the tri-Beckta are convivial — incredibly hospitable staff who go out of their way to make you feel welcome and well taken care of.  All three have amazing food, impeccably matched with wines.  But gezellig is cozy too, and it will be a welcome addition to Westboro.  More details HERE.

Gezellig.  337 Richmond Road (at Churchill), Ottawa. 613-680-9086.

Opens for dinner October 22. Lunch starts October 29. Brunch begins November 3.

The other two parts of the tri-Beckta:

Beckta Dining & Wine

Play Food & Wine

Ottawa: Union

One of my very favourite Ottawa masters of food and wine (and there are many!) is opening up a new restaurant.  Ivan Gedz and Chris Lord open Union on July 17 — a salute to southern food, drink and hospitality, all with a local flare.  315 Somerset Street West, 613 231 1010.  Read more HERE.

Cobra?!  No, we didn’t eat cobra.  But I suppose they have already served it, and the point is to be innovative.

A Cobra dinner is a mysterious dining event — how to get invited is a mystery, the menu and chefs are a mystery, even the location is a mystery.

What isn’t a mystery is that it is run by Marc Lepine, Chef/Owner of Ottawa’s Atelier restaurant and winner of the 2012 Canadian Culinary Championship.  He gets a bunch of chefs together at someone’s house, they cook up an incredible blind tasting menu for as many guests as the place will hold, and guests each donate $100 to the featured charity.  Chefs donate the ingredients, their time, and their imaginations.

I was lucky enough to host the June 2012 Cobra dinner.  And while I won’t reveal all the secrets, I will spill enough that I know you will want to sign up at EatCobra.ca for the chance to attend a future dinner.  Stay tuned ….

There’s a new place in town — Brothers Beer Bistro — and early signs are that it will be great!  Although with so many of those involved being former Becktopians (from Beckta Dining & Wine and/or Play Food & Wine) … I would have been surprised if it was NOT great.  Owners Pat Asselin and Nick Ringuette and Chef Darren Flowers have done a great job.

I sampled perfectly seasoned frites, chicken ‘n’ waffles, a bright asparagus salad, fabulous tartare, and a juicy slider (is it still sampling if I had 3?)  Even as a non-beer drinker, I tried 2 beers (there are 16 on tap) that I would definitely order again, and an ode-to-beer cocktail.

More details HERE.

366 Dalhousie at George (Byward Market, Ottawa).  613 695 6300.

Grand opening May 25, 2012.
