Congratulations to @sroseman for her winning tweet about a great Ottawa dish she enjoyed! She raved about the February 2012 Taste of Winterlude demo from Le Cordon Bleu Cooking School on the Rideau Canal.
Visiting Ottawa during Winterlude is a great way to sample the city’s great food, and you can work off the calories by taking a skate on the world’s longest skating rink, the Rideau Canal Skateway. The 2013 Winterlude is February 1 to 18, and you can get more info on their website.
Ottawa is lucky to have Canada’s only campus of Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Institute. Here you can take courses at the professional level for certificates and diplomas, or shorter courses for enthusiasts.
And everyone can eat! The Bistro at Signatures offers lunch, dinner, and catering. They also have a shop where you can buy cooking tools and food products.
The contest
Our winner will receive a $25 gift certificate from Dishcrawl Ottawa which can be used for a ticket for an upcoming Dishcrawl, Dishwalk or Chef’s Table event. The crawl on February 5 or 6 looks great, exploring Little Italy and Chinatown. Check out the Dishcrawl Ottawa website for more info.
How was the winner picked? I wrote down the name of each person who entered the contest (by tweeting or posting a comment on TravelEater.wordpress.com) and put all the papers in a bowl. My six year old nephew then picked one out of the bowl (while he was eating his breakfast … Guess what will be discussed at show and tell today?).
The nephew, Dishcrawl Ottawa and I all congratulate @sroseman on winning the gift certificate. We’d love to hear about which event you choose and what you eat! Get in touch if you’d like to write a guest post here.

I’ve moved away from Canada’s great eating capital but I’m missing the food. So I want to live vicariously through you … therefore @TravelEater and @DishCrawlOTT are joining together to offer Ottawa foodies a contest.
How: Tweet a photo of a great dish from an Ottawa restaurant and/or what’s so great about it. Mention @TravelEater and @DishcrawlOTT in the tweet so we see it. We’ll retweet our favourites and we’ll select one to win a prize.
Not on Twitter? If you leave a comment below describing a dish, you’re entered too.
Deadline: We’ll select the winner Friday, February 1, so tweet or post your comment before midnight Ottawa time on Thursday, January 31.
Ok, so what do I win?! You win a $25 gift certificate to use at Ottawa Dishcrawl. It is easy to pickup online, and you can use it as early as the next dishcrawl on February 5 or 6.
So, what is a dishcrawl exactly?
You meet up with a bunch of people just like you, and, led by your knowledgeable host, you walk from restaurant to restaurant, each of which has prepared a special dish just for the food crawl. Eat up, then on to the next! All food is included in the ticket price (if you want a drink, they’re extra unless otherwise indicated). Photos, tweeting, and sharing eating advice with your table mates are more than welcome.
Want to know more? Click HERE to read about my experience at the first Ottawa dessert crawl (my advice: bring a tupperware container if your eyes are bigger than your stomach!)
And check out the Dishcrawl Ottawa website (http://www.dishcrawl.com/ottawa/). The next Ottawa event is East Meets West, exploring Little Italy and Chinatown. The first date sold so quickly, so they added a second. February 5 and February 6.

My latest post as World Travel Buzz‘s International Eating Expert is about eating sweet things in New York City. And there’s a recipe for caramel Chelsea buns, inspired by Danny Meyer’s Maialino restaurant. Click HERE to read the article.
(Although not mentioned, the concretes from Shake Shack (above) are also delicious!)

Have you read Eat In Eat Out magazine? It is a digital mag for people who love to cook, eat and dine out.
My little piece on Stephen Beckta’s third restaurant, gezellig, is in the Holiday 2012 issue. Check it out on the EIEO site HERE.
The link to my blog post on gezellig is HERE.

Lucky Ottawa!
Steve Beckta’s latest — gezellig — opens October 22 and it is indeed gezellig.
Gezellig is a Dutch word that roughly translates as “cozy conviviality”. Now, all three restaurants in the tri-Beckta are convivial — incredibly hospitable staff who go out of their way to make you feel welcome and well taken care of. All three have amazing food, impeccably matched with wines. But gezellig is cozy too, and it will be a welcome addition to Westboro. More details HERE.
Gezellig. 337 Richmond Road (at Churchill), Ottawa. 613-680-9086.
Opens for dinner October 22. Lunch starts October 29. Brunch begins November 3.
The other two parts of the tri-Beckta:
